Restaurant c.1990 - Dave McKinnon

In about 1990 Christa and myself went out to California on holiday and stayed with Nigel and Dianna for a week. Nigel and Dianna were excellent hosts and on the last night of our stay we offered to take them out to dinner. Nigel booked a table at a restaurant and when we arrived it was immediately obvious that this was a seriously expensive place. The waiter, who Nigel seemed to know, showed us to our table by the window overlooking the marina and immediately brought cocktails and the wine list. I didn't even get a chance to look at the wine list, Nigel just grabbed it and ordered 2 bottles of something very expensive. Nigel and Dianna also ordered the most expensive steak on the menu. By this time I was beginning to get a bit annoyed and really thought 'you're taking the mick Nigel', after all none of us had much money in those days. However I kept my cool and just tried to console my self by saying this is still cheaper than paying for a hotel room for a week. When the bill finally arrived I was asked to sign a form, I asked what this was and the waiter said 'This is just to say you work in our other branch in San Diego so you get the meal for half price!' He also only charged us for one bottle of wine and didn't charge us for deserts or cocktails! So we got a 5 star meal for a 2 star price! Of course the waiter was a friend of Nigel, and it was all planned from the start and Nigel just wanted me to sweat during the meal! He succeeded - my only consolation was that I didn't let on that I was sweating and showed no sign of relief when the bill arrived. I reckon that was almost one all! Dave McKinnon
